Microsoft Files on Demand Is Ideal for Ultrabook Owners and Resellers

Microsoft is further blurring the distinction between local and cloud storage with a file sync feature that lets you treat online files as offline.

Files On-Demand allows you to access cloud storage as if it were local files, without having to store them indefinitely. This feature is ideal for Windows users on ultrabooks with little memory.

On-demand cloud file access is news to Microsoft, but the ability to store files is not unusual. A standard cloud storage service like Google Drive forces you to store the cloud files you want to access on your local storage. Last year, Dropbox introduced Smart Sync , its on-demand file storage business feature that treats online files as local.

Files on Demand also lets you open online files from desktop or Windows Store apps using the Windows File Picker. Just select the file you want to open in the file picker and the file will automatically download and open in your application. Plus, you cover both home and professional life as it works with your personal and work OneDrive, as well as SharePoint Online team sites.

This feature will be available to all Windows 10 users in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update , although you can try it a little earlier. Windows Insiders using Build 16215 can use it alongside impatient Windows 10 users who can manually download the update .
