Using Potatoes That Are Not Made Into Fries

A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that eating french fries or other fried potato foods may increase your risk of death. For the study, the researchers looked at home at a group of 4,400 people, ages 45 to 79, who had been eating their straw for eight years. By the end of the study, 236 people had died, and they were mostly french fries eaters.

While it could be argued that people who eat fries twice a week have probably made some other unhealthy choice in their lives (and I’m in no way going to give up one of my favorite foods), if you’ve stocked up on fries. To make French fries for dinner every night, you might be best off going back to once a week and using the excess in one of the following ways:

Make your eyes less puffy

Yes, cucumbers are what they lose at the spa, but potatoes can also soothe tired eyes. Slice cold potatoes and place the slices over your eyes. After 15 minutes, your eyes will be much less puffy.

Ease Burn Pain

Potatoes also soothes minor burns. If you accidentally burn yourself while frying, apply a thin potato slice to the burn to relieve pain.

Say goodbye to Rust

My mom swore potatoes on rust. Cut open the potatoes, then scrub the pulp of pots, pans, tools, and more, just like using a sponge. The acid from the potatoes will help get rid of the clumps. The trick also works with tarnished silver.

Remove broken light bulb

When a light bulb breaks while it is still screwed in, removing it can be problematic. Turn off the lights and then gently insert the cut potatoes into the stuck bottom (be very careful with the glass leftovers, it will break!). With a firm grip on the bulb, you can turn the potatoes to safely remove it.

Make the soup less salty

Potatoes are excellent at absorbing salt (this is partly why potatoes are so tasty). If you’ve made a soup and overdid it with salt, add a few slices of chopped potatoes. Wait 10 minutes and then fish out the potatoes. It will absorb a fair amount of salt and your soup will be delicious again.
