How to Disable the MacBook Pro Touch Bar

Since last fall, new MacBook Pro models have replaced the function keys with the Touch Bar, a gimmick display at the top of the keyboard. It takes some getting used to, and you may find yourself grope for the delete key and turn up the volume in your headphones, or lazily put your finger on the exit key and lose your job.

OS X’s built-in keyboard preferences allow you to customize the touchpad, so you can remove nonsensical features like keyboard brightness and move others to the middle of the panel where you’re less likely to hit them. But they do not allow you to disable the exit key or the entire touchpad.

To do this you will need TouchBarDisabler , GitHub project that allows you to switch between the touch panel and automatically reassigns brightness and volume controls for keyboard shortcuts.

Since Mac with a touchbar doesn’t have a real exit key, you’ll need to remap it as well. TouchBarDisabler creator HiKay recommends using OS X Keyboard Preferences to assign an escape function to the Caps Lock key . Or use the powerful keyboard Remapper BetterTouchTool to assign it a more convenient key like ~ `. All this remapping may sound strange, but the same happens with touching the touchpad and losing all your work (or hearing).
