Why “Nonline” Is the New “Offline”

When people ask where I live, I’m more likely to answer Twitter than my city of residence. And, just like in my real city, sometimes I need to get out of the city and settle down somewhere else – somewhere with real trees and real birds tweeting.

Everyone has their own way of coping with internet burnout . A weekend away from technology; Writing an essay on how quitting the Internet has changed your life for the better (or worse); Even placing your phone in a Faraday cage will help ease the feeling you get when checking your inbox.

Going offline? You don’t need to make it a spectacle, and you don’t need to completely cut the cobwebs out of your life and live like a Luddite. Perhaps the solution to your distracted lifestyle is not to abandon your entire online existence, but to reduce what you consider to be “going offline.”

Instead of disconnecting from the network – ripping off your clothes and jumping into the forest, can I suggest something else? Have you tried being “non-linear”?

Writer Patrick Ron referred to the ironic definition of the word, this editor Jason Remus .

nonline or non-line (adj.): No longer discoverable, provided, used primarily, or contacted over the Internet.

In his newsletter, he described his self-imposed exile from the modern web as striving to rediscover writing for a one-man audience rather than thousands of followers, and as a realization of how easy it is to feel like everything is happening immediately. , urgent and needs attention. Being online today means keeping everyone updated on what they are doing.

The tools make it very easy to immediately convey even the most stupid and fleeting thoughts. I have embraced a sense of extreme urgency that I feel (perhaps wrongly, I admit) that the tools demand of me. What Everyone Should Know “What’s going on?” in my head right this second. I also convinced myself that if I didn’t show up and keep pressing the Publish button, the people who really care about my work and my words will stop caring and leave. I think this is the problem.

Okay, “non-linear” is a little pretentious, but it does a great job of defining what we think of as “online” and “offline” activities. For many, going offline means turning off and on everything related to the display and internet connection. Going offline involves doing things in the “real world,” such as cooking for the “family” and “talking” on the “phone” with someone you “love” or something like that. But a “non-linear” approach could mean keeping an eye on your email (a necessity more than a possibility) while ditching the rest of your online image. It’s not going anywhere.

The benefits of using “non-linear” mode are obvious if you’ve ever wondered how you feel after being on the Internet for just a few hours. He constantly deceives us, makes us think that we are smarter than we are , replacing real knowledge with where you found it , and bombarding you with a constant stream of negative news, commentators spewing vitriol (not you guys, I love you), and jokes about “covfefe” while the world is crumbling around you. All of these are not good for your mental well-being, as almost all articles on the Internet claim.
