Stop Already Storing Knives in Drawers
Knives are some of the most important tools in the kitchen, but there are people who store them in drawers where they clang, knock, grow dull and sad. Do not do it. There are much better ways to store knives, and you can even make some of them yourself.
Part of The Grown Up Kitchen series , Skillet is designed to answer your most basic cooking questions and fill in any gaps that may be missing from your home chef education.
- Buy a utility knife block: Many knife sets come with a block, but you’d better buy some really good custom knives and then expand your collection as needed. This may initially leave you without blocks, but there are many good all-round knife blocks, such as this one from Kapoosh , which features flexible plastic rods and can fit into just about any kitchen cutlery arsenal.
- Magnet a section of the wall: I don’t have a ton of counter space, so I prefer to keep my knives on the wall. This not only keeps them in good condition and allows easy access, but it (I think) looks cool. They can also be a fairly cheap option – IKEA has one for under $ 10 , or you can make one yourself .
- Keep them (protected) in a drawer: If you absolutely need to keep knives in a drawer for some reason – maybe you like this book The Art of Keeping All Your Things in Sight – at least bring them some sleeves or keep them them in a roll . If you want to get a little prettier, you can buy a special drawer box to protect the knives .
Just don’t let them randomly lie there. It’s just brutal (and expensive when you have to buy new knives).
