What Makes the Perfect Sandwich?
Happy Monday and welcome toWhat’s Cooking? , a weekly open thread where you can share all your brilliant thoughts, tips, recipes and opinions on anything edible. This week I want to talk about this humble but often excellent meal between two slices of bread – the sandwich.
Like Liz Lemon,my worldview is based on sandwiches , and I truly believe that there are several things that are more enjoyable – and, dare I say “healing”? – than a good sandwich. While the concept of a sandwich is simple – put something in between the breads – to make a truly great sandwich, you need to find the perfect balance of texture and flavor, and it’s not as easy as it sounds. So what I would like to know from you is what makes good sandwiches, which ones are you particularly good at making, and if you think a hot dog is okay.
- What sandwich can you make better than anyone else? I make the perfect tomato sandwich. The trick is to keep it as simple as possible with good tomatoes, white bread, mayonnaise, and salt. I also make insanely great leftover sandwiches for Thanksgiving.
- Who makes your favorite underwater sandwich? The only thing I miss in my life in Florida is the impeccable Publix subtitles, especially the Italian one. Oh, how I miss this sandwich.
- What’s your favorite hot sandwich? To be honest, I have a good cheese steak.
- What’s your favorite cold sandwich? I love good Italian offal, but my favorite sandwich on earth is probably the aforementioned tomato sandwich. It’s so easy and so good.
- What is the best cheese to use for grilled cheese? I love Americans and I don’t care what you think.
- Is a hot dog a sandwich? Is a lobster roll a sandwich? Is KFC Double Down a sandwich? These are the questions to be answered.
- What’s the weirdest sandwich you’ve ever eaten? It was good? I don’t even know what “weird” means, but I love the peanut butter and pickled cucumber sandwiches. In fact, the first article I ever got paid for was about peanut butter and pickled cucumber sandwiches.
- Mayo or the miracle whip? MAYO.
- Is jelly the best peanut butter pairing? I mean, you guys know I love pickles, but I love bananas too.
- What is the Platonic ideal of a breakfast sandwich? I’m all about bacon, egg and cheese. I also eat the iconic McMuffin when I’m on the road (Diet Coke, nutch).
- What’s the best picnic sandwich? How to prevent bread from getting wet? Finally, it was picnic season.
