How to Become a Podcast God With Leo Laporte

This week at The Upgrade, we’ll talk to Leo Laporte: author, entrepreneur, speaker and, yes, the god of tech podcasts.

Leo hosts The Tech Guy Show , a national radio technology talk show that airs on over 200 stations. In addition, its TWiT Netcast Network produces some of the most popular podcasts in the world, including shows such as “A WEEK in TECH , Security Now!” New Screensavers and Triangulation Shows Winning the 2017 Webby Award .

Discussion this week

In this episode, we covered most of the territory, including but not limited to:

  • How Leo Laporte became the Tech Guy
  • The actualization of computer culture and how strange it was to be a computer fanatic when TechTV was founded
  • Why podcasts should be called “netcasts,” but it probably won’t happen
  • The importance of the Electronic Frontier Foundation
  • Leo’s conversation with Ben Wiesner, Edward Snowden’s attorney and director of the ACLU Speech, Privacy and Technology Project
  • Why we should all use Chromebooks and cultivate “deep cynicism and suspicion”
  • How can we all get started podcasting (but probably not for the money).
  • The consequences of growing up in a world where reality breaks down
  • The importance of disconnecting to reconnect

And much more. This is a real episode.

Our weekly updates

Every week we want to tell you about the improvements we have made to our lives. This week we talk about new beginnings, the joys found in both high-tech and low-tech devices, and the end (food). For all the details, listen.

We take to the streets

We thought we would go outside and ask people about their favorite tech tricks, so we headed to Union Square (here in New York). We have some great tips, so be sure to listen to them all the way.

How can I ask a question?

There are two ways to ask a question:

  • Call (347) 687-8109 and write down the question. The calls are awesome! We could just play yours on the show!
  • Send your question to [email protected] .

Try to keep your questions as short as possible. That means 3-5 sentences for emails and 30-60 seconds for calls and videos. Your questions may be specific, but broader questions are generally better because they apply to more people. In any case, we look forward to hearing from you.
