Happy Hour With 3 Ingredients: Mom-Osa Elderberry Grapefruit
Happy weekend and welcome back to Happy 3 Ingredient Hour , a weekly drinks column featuring very simple yet delicious libations. This week we are making mimosa for mom – “momoza,” if you like – and making something special out of it.
I know mimosa is quirky in and of itself – it comes in a glass of champagne, after all – but we’re talking about mom and she only deserves the most primitive things, including sparkling alcoholic drinks. To make momoza, we’ll need the juice of a beautiful pink grapefruit and a sweet, sweet elderflower liqueur. However, before we get into the details, I will tell you a little elderberry-smelling secret.
I don’t use elderflower liqueur in many of the cocktails I make for myself, and if I’m going to pay $ 30 for a bottle of ethanol, it’ll be gin or rye, not Saint Germain (I love the pretty bottle though). Instead, I’ll take a $ 5 bottle of IKEA elderflower syrup and mix equal parts with vodka as needed to make my own much cheaper elderflower syrup drink.
You can of course use whatever elderflower liqueur you wish – do it yourself or not – I just thought I’d share this little tip with you. Either way, to make this sweet and tart sparkling sandwich you’ll need:
- 1 ounce elderberry liqueur
- 30 g of ruby and red grapefruit juice
- Whatever champagne you want, for the filling
Pour liquor and juice into champagne glass and stir both ingredients. Pour sparkling wine on top and pass it to your beloved mother. Or, if you’re not celebrating Mother’s Day, just drink it yourself. Nemoms will love it too.
