Is This Bluetooth Salt Shaker a Seasoning Juicer?

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you about the “smart salt shaker” called “ Smalta ”. Ironically, the shaking aspect of this shaker is still clearly off – you still have to do all the shaking; Smalta simply “tracks” it for you. (And lights up. And plays music.) In fact, this is Juicero seasoning.

As for how he “tracks” – is he aware of my strangely high SPAM consumption? – the text is rather vague:

“If you want to hand out a pinch or a teaspoon, turn the dial or just ask Alex and wait for the magic to happen.”

I need to know more about this “magic”. Does the little troll come out and distribute the desired amount of sodium chloride? Is his name Smalt? Is this magic? If you have more than one person in your home – or two if we count the Smalt Salt Troll – does he keep track of salt for every member of your family?

The other features of Smalt are much simpler, but still confusing. It can play music – everything from Jazz to Johnny Cash! – or provide a little mood lighting with a color-changing light strip (no word on how much lumen this thing emits). If you haven’t purchased a bluetooth speaker yet and recently broke your salt shaker, I think you could kill two very different birds with one really random rock and get this thing.

To be honest, the salt shaker part in this salt shaker seems like a bit of an afterthought, and its creators seem to be more excited about the “start of conversation” aspect. I mean, I’ll give it to them; this thing could start some kind of conversation. “What it is?” may your friend ask.

“Oh this?” you say with a wave of your hair. “This is Smalt, my mood-enhancing robotic salt shaker who talks to Alexa and plays me Kenny J. And Johnny Cash. He is my best friend.”

“Oh. How does it shake out the salt?”

“What?”

Listen, if you’re that kind of person who’s always looking for things to spend money on, you probably already have a Bluetooth speaker and you’ve probably got your mood light right. If you really need to experiment with salt, I have some tips:

  • Buy a salt shaker or salt shaker: Salt is an important part of cooking and you should have easy access to it. Both salt pigs and salt shakers protect your salt from dust and debris, allowing you to reach it without a single shake.
  • Spoil yourself with fancy salt: take Maldon , girl. You deserve it. These large, beautiful flakes add flavor, texture, and class.
  • Make some scented salt: If salt, as an object, tires you to tears, do it even better by adding a little scent to these scowling crystals. Currently, I really love tomato salt , but there are many options .

Just don’t buy smalt. Technically, you couldn’t even if you wanted to – it’s not even on Indiegogo yet – so at least there’s a little consolation.
