What’s Cooking? What Are Your Mother’s Meal Plans for Mother’s Day?
Hello, and welcome back to What’s Cooking? , a weekly open thread where you can share all your brilliant thoughts, tips, recipes and opinions on anything edible. Mother’s Day is approaching, so we should probably talk about it.
“For brunch or not for brunch?” it’s always a big question. Literally everyone and their mother will be trying to find a table for delicious French toast and mimosa (momosa?), And it might be a little less relaxing. Whenever I lived in the same city with my mom or mother-in-law, I always stayed at home and cook, as I would rather throw pancakes than fight with the crowd.
So, now I would like to know what you have planned to celebrate mothers in your life, and I would also like to talk about every single recipe, advice and kitchen wisdom that the loving ladies in your life have bestowed upon you. … As always, I have questions:
- BIG QUESTION: Will you go out or stay at home? Will you fight the brunch crowd or make a quiche from the comfort of your own kitchen?
- Will you feed your mom, mother-in-law, wife, or all three? I hope they all have the same tastes.
- Does your mom like a sweet or savory brunch? Benedict or French Toast Casserole? (If you need Benedict’s recipe to feed the crowd, the ChefSteps method is pretty darn hard . I used it on Easter and was amazed at how easy it was.)
- Does the mom in question even like brunch? My mom doesn’t like to eat until noon or eat a lot in one meal, and it’s best to just feed her a steady stream of coffee until her stomach is ready to eat. This type of mother unit prefers Mother’s Day dinner and if she was here I would probably serve her a steak.
- If your partner is a mother: will the toddlers participate in the preparation of the meal? Do you have any good strategies to make the kids feel involved, but not overwhelm them?
- Do you have a favorite recipe or kitchen tip from your mom, grandmother, or other mom? My grandmother taught me how to make cornbread, and I treasure this recipe very much. (The secret is in the fatty bacon.)
- Does your mother drink? What is her poison? My mom loves margaritas and expensive beer.
In fact, taking Mom to a trendy beer / wine / cocktail bar this Sunday would be really cool, especially if you take the bill.
