Best Time of Year to Sell Unnecessary Shit
We’ve told you when is the best time to buy something in the year , but what if you want to sell your junk rather than stockpile it? Here are the best months to sell whatever is gathering dust in your closets right now.
The folks at OfferUp, a site and app that lets you buy and sell things locally (sort of like the previously mentioned TagSale ) sent us some data and information on when you should sell your junk to get the most out of your investment.
- Baby Equipment: July or August Summer is the best time to sell your old cribs, strollers and other baby equipment because the data shows that most babies are born in late summer . OfferUp reported that the average price for a crib on their website was $ 80 in July, up 12% from October.
- Cars: March Since many dealerships have President’s Day sales in February, many buyers end up selling their older models around this time. OfferUp recommends waiting out the peak period and selling in March instead. “You can get on average $ 243 more if you wait a month and you see less competition from other listings,” a spokesman said in an email.
- Jewelry and Wedding Rings: November Many people give jewelry for the holidays, so if you have any expensive items to sell, you should probably list them in November. Plus, December is the peak time for meetings. In November, the average engagement ring price on OfferUp is $ 840, up from $ 690 in October.
- Furniture: September We already told you that rents are skyrocketing in September, so this is a really awful time to look for an apartment, but a really good time to sell things to people moving into apartments. This also applies to garden furniture. October is one of the best months to buy garden furniture because so many large supermarkets are on sale, but if you sell garden furniture, September is the best month to do so. You get inside before the sale items come in and while the tenants have yet to furnish their new backyards. OfferUp reports that sellers sell an average of $ 140 in terrace merchandise in September and $ 115 in October.
It’s also worth noting that the beginning of the year through March may not be the best time to sell your old items in general. Think about it: we all clean our toilets after the holidays or around spring , so you’ll have more competition from other people selling their unwanted crap. Plus, thrift stores often see a spike in end-of-year donations as people try to claim tax deductions at the last minute.
Of course, sometimes it’s worth selling the junk as soon as possible to get rid of the clutter. If you want to get a little more money, consider your timing.
