All the Software Two Ohio Inmates Need to Hack Wi-Fi Networks From the Comfort of Their Prison

Earlier this week, it was revealed that two inmates at the Ohio State Department of Rehabilitation and Remedy were caught with several computers hacked together, hidden in the ceiling above a closet. What have they done with these computers? Aside from the obvious porn downloads, they’ve also posed all sorts of scams and hacks.

Two inmates, Adam Johnston and Scott Spriggs, somehow managed to not only assemble whole computers with stolen parts without anyone noticing, but also routed Ethernet cables through the ceiling to a network switch to access the Internet without any restrictions. … They then gained access to these computers and their unlimited Internet access using remote desktop software .

With this newfound power, they stole the identity of one inmate and used it to apply for five credit cards, downloaded tons of porn and other films, then sent them to other inmates on flash drives, then used various brute force programs. force password cracking, spam emails, and perform multiple attacker-in-the-middle attacks to hijack account credentials so that they can issue passes to inmates in jail.

Good news: we have a full report from the Ohio Inspector General , which includes a list of all the software the prisoners used. If you’ve read Lifehacker for a while, you’ll recognize some of these programs:

All of this is something from the ” Mr. Robot” series, but in Ohio, and a little less political in nature. Nonetheless, it’s a fascinating story, and despite its illegal nature, any geek can at least nod his head respectfully.
