PSA: Mexico May Not Be the Best Place for Spring Break Right Now
Mexico is a popular spring break destination because it is warm, close to the US, and inexpensive. But the US State Department has renewed travel warnings for most of Mexico, so if you’re considering going there, you might want to schedule a trip elsewhere. If you’ve already booked your trip, here’s how to keep yourself safe.
The State Department has warned against visiting nearly half of Mexico’s states due to high levels of violence and crime. However, they also add that “Mexico’s tourist destinations tend not to see levels of drug-related violence and crime,” so you will probably be fine if you stick to popular destinations. You can check if the state you are visiting is part of the prevention and what types of crime to watch out for here . Some other ways to take care of your safety while traveling:
- Be aware of common scams , such as fake police officers asking for your wallet or other valuables, or those trying to steal your identity by calling your number and pretending to be a front desk employee.
- Consider registering with STEP . Smart Traveler registration software keeps you informed of travel alerts and safety conditions in the area you are in. This program runs through your nearest US embassy or consulate, making it much easier to reach out to those returning home in the event of an emergency. …
- Pay attention to your surroundings . Ask your hotel staff or the Airbnb host to indicate which areas you shouldn’t travel to. Know the street and area where you are staying. Do not display money, valuable jewelry or electronics on the street, and treat the locals with respect.
Spring break is a time when people usually let go and want to chill out, but that doesn’t mean giving up common sense.
