What to Do If You Are Attacked by a Dog According to a Former Fur Seal
I hope you never get into a situation where you have to use these tips, but they might just come in handy to help you deal with a dog attack. In this Business Insider video, a former fur seal tells you what you need to know to protect yourself.
First, make it clear that the dog is actually going to attack you . Use a shirt, jacket, or purse to distract your dog’s attention from other vital parts of the body. If the dog pounces, most of us can reflexively put our hands in front of us to protect us from the dog. But Clint Emerson cautions that you should only expose the outside of your forearm and, if possible, wrap your shirt around your forearm for added protection. We want to protect the main arteries on the ulnar andradial sides at all costs.
If you need to fight back, Emerson advises to literally punch the dog in the nose. The reason is that this is a big goal for you. When you are under threat and heightened stress from an attack, he explains, all you can do is focus on “big moves on your side towards big targets on the dog.” The dog’s ribcage is also a sensitive area.
