Beyond Rice Crispies: Six Grains to Make a Great Marshmallow Treat
Simple 3-way crispy rice treats are little bits of sweet, marshmallow magic, but if you want to get out and really live , I suggest changing your cereal from time to time.
If you’ve ever waltzed down the cereal aisle at your local grocery store, you’ve probably noticed that there are quite a few brightly colored boxes to choose from. To spice up your marshmallow squares with something new and exciting, simply follow the classic recipe and add the six cups of cereal you have chosen for this delicious assignment. If you need inspiration, I’ve taken the liberty of listing a few of my favorites:
- Cocoa Krispies: Technically they are Rice Krispies – they even have these three little guys on the box – but they are chocolate Rice Krispies and I think they deserve a special mention. Make them the same way you would “regular” treats, but perhaps sprinkle on some unsweetened cocoa powder or super dark chocolate shavings on them as they are set.
- Lucky Charms: You’ll get double the pleasure of marshmallows with this magically delicious porridge, and it’s a lot of fun to watch. Sprinkle edible glitter on top if you’re all about eating unicorn .
- Cap’n Crunch Crunch Berries: Sure, you can make a treat with the regular Cap’n Crunch, but I don’t know why you would do that when you have Crunch Berries. If you want to go to a very berry place, grab a box of Oops! All berries are iterated.
- Chex: I’m not suggesting you just make a Chex cereal treat and call if a day. I suggest you make a treat with the Chex sweet and savory mix . The process is a little more complicated than a regular marshmallow square, but well worth it. Instead of six cups of cereal, use three cups and add a cup of coarsely chopped pretzels, a cup of mini M&M, and a cup of chopped pecans. If you think this is too much, moderate the sweetness by browning the butter before stirring.
- Golden Grahams: I have two words for you, and these are the words “s’mores owns.” Simply toss a cup or two of chocolate chips into the mixture and cover with a little marshmallow still while it hardens. For maximum stickiness, burn the top layer of mallow just before serving.
- Reese’s Puffs: There isn’t much to say about that other than “I will now accept my James Beard award.” Make them just like any marshmallow square, only with great pleasure.
Keep in mind that the above is meant to inspire, not dictate, your journey through the marshmallow square. Heck, we didn’t even talk about using two different grains, and this is something you should definitely look into.
