This Video Shows You How to Use Color Correcting Makeup Correctly.

If you want to compensate for dark circles, redness, or dark spots with makeup, you need to understand how using orange, green, yellow, and a few other colors can even out your skin tone – this is called color correction. The technique is popular, but it is very easy to spoil it. This video helps clear up the confusion.

This is all based on the color wheel. If we remember our primary colors – blue, yellow, red – and their mixing properties, we can “neutralize” certain hues on our skin by using the opposite color to the color on the color wheel. These are the basics:

  • Peach / Orange: For dark blue under eye circles, pigmentation and acne scars. Use peach for lighter skin tones and orange / red for darker skin tones.
  • Green: Can be used for redness (such as sunburn or rosacea) around the mouth or cheeks.
  • Magenta: Adds a bit of brightness to dull gray skin.
  • Yellow: Usually brightens the skin tone.

The basic idea is that you correct, not hide. YouTuber Kaushal Beauty shares a couple of other tips to keep in mind:

  • Make sure your skin is clean and primed before applying makeup.
  • It’s always best to start with less product and build up.
  • It’s easy to overdo it with a brush. For the under-eye area, you’ll be better off using your ring finger to gently apply a thin layer of makeup and apply it to your skin for a more natural look.
  • After you’ve corrected your skin tone, Kaushal Beauty recommends using a makeup sponge and patting the foundation instead of wide strokes.
