How to Ask Your Boss for a Break

Let’s face it, even though many of us are entitled to some vacation time , we can get kicked out by our boss, especially when there is a lot going on in the office. Ramit Sethi shared a simple email script to help you get your boss to say yes.

In an article by Sethi, author of the New York Times bestselling book, I’ll Teach You To Be Rich , he suggests using this scenario (literally, if we wanted to):

I want to request vacation time from Monday, October 2 to Friday, October 6, because these days I will be vacationing with my family.

While I am away, I will be contacted by email, but not by phone. I’ll make sure we have coverage in the support queue while I’m away, and I’ll also distribute a tutorial for my team so it’s clear who the issues belong to.

This is fine?

Thank you,

-Ramit

Sethi says this letter is effective because you’ve mitigated a lot of your boss’s worries, like having to redirect your work to other people or making sure the project is still ongoing while you’re gone, so there aren’t many reasons left. so that she or he will refuse you. It also has very subtle wording that increases the likelihood that your boss will say yes. Sethi notes that you should definitely send the email weeks or months in advance so that your boss has enough time to plan his vacation.
