Store These Items in Your Pantry in Case of a Blizzard.

If you’ve lived your life in a warm and snowless climate, you may have a kind of romanticized idea of what it means to be “snowed in.” But, as I recently learned from my own experience , being in the snow is a serious matter, and your pantry needs to be prepared.

Aside from the title of one of the most iconic Christmas albums of all time , “Snowfall” can describe a very stressful, isolated situation in which it seems like you will never leave your abode again. Luckily, The Kitchn has compiled an extensive list of shelf-stable foods you should have in your pantry to keep yourself well-fed, hydrated, and somewhat sane. Click the link below to read the full list, but these are my favorites:

  • Peanut Butter: I guess it doesn’t have to be peanut butter, but some peanut butter will stay edible even if the power goes out for a while.
  • Good Crackers: If you’re going to get stuck inside, you can also eat the snacks you like, and a quality cracker can really enhance your eating experience.
  • Canned Food: Tuna and chickpeas can be good food at room temperature when seasoned with good olive oil and whatever condiments you find in your spice cabinet, especially when paired with those fancy crackers you bought so smartly.
  • Chocolate: A bar of really dark, really good chocolate instantly lifts your spirits. (Bonus: Dip it in peanut butter.)
  • Wine: Buy a bottle that pairs with chocolate and a bottle that pairs with tuna.
  • Fruit: Fruit can sit on the counter for a while without incident. I recommend grabbing a box of tangerines, the funniest of fruits.

Of course, make sure you have plenty of bottled water in case your pipes freeze or your city’s water treatment system goes down. Water is very important. (This is the essence of moisture and everything .)
