Grocery Stores Will Soon Have Practical, Standardized Expiration Dates
We have known for a long time that the shelf life of products in stores is a collection of different terms that mean absolutely nothing . Now, the Food Marketing Institute and the Food Manufacturers Association have developed a plan that simplifies the label you see on food.
There are currently more than 10 different date labels on food, such as “Sell By”, “ Best before”, “ Best before”, “ Best before”, etc. The new initiate will use just two phrases: Best If Use By and Use By .
Best, if consumed, means the quality of the food, but after that date it can still be eaten. Do’s use refers to perishable foods that should be eaten for a limited time.
Unfortunately this is a voluntary guideline, but we hope the food industry adapts it as a whole. You should start seeing new labels in grocery stores soon, although most retailers are aiming to have them installed by July 2018.
