How to Remake an Old Dog Sweater
Some dogs need some warmth in cold weather in the form of a dog sweater or jacket. You can turn an old sweater or sweatshirt into a sweater for your dog with a little sewing, and this video will show you how.
The first thing you need to do is create a pattern by measuring your dog (skip to 01:00 in the video above to see how). You may need someone to hold them still or distract them with treats, but once you have your measurements, you can use the same drawing over and over.
A slightly stretchy sweater is best to make it easier for your dog to move around. If the fabric of the sweater is not very elastic, you can loosen it up. Place the pattern over the top of the sweater so that the edge that will go over your dog’s back matches the bottom of the sweater; this saves you the trouble of hemming that part of the sweater. Circle the pattern on the sweater and cut it out. Add sleeves, if desired, by cutting them out from the cuff of the sweater. Sew the top and bottom of the sweater together and add a neck by reusing the neck of the sweater. You can use the same technique for old sweatshirts and T-shirts. The video above also shows how to add a hood.
Aside from keeping your dog warm, this is a great way to remodel a worn, stained, or torn sweater or sweatshirt, rather than throwing it all in the trash can.
