Focus on One or Two Social Issues to Stay Involved Without Losing Your Mind
After the elections, many people turned to activism as a productive expression of their outrage. However, the outrage can be overwhelming: you often feel like giving up just so you don’t lose your mind. Focus your attention on one or two issues to prevent this from happening.
Medium’s lawyer Mira Kertser offers several tactics to keep your mind on and deal with social issues. Kurzer suggests:
You cannot come to every march and donate to every cause … If you want to be successful at anything, pick one or two problems that matter most to you and fight for them … Important caveat: I am not saying that we collectively need to pick a few issues and let everything else fade into the background … This is advice to individuals, not to the party or movement as a whole.
Nor can it be said that other problems are less important or that one should turn a blind eye to them. Körser believes that, like everything else, too many options can lead to analytic paralysis. In her words, “Sure, retweet and share on Facebook about your secondary concerns, but focus on what worries you the most.”
