Keep Beer Out of Light to Avoid This “skunk” Taste

If you do not take beer, it can get an unpleasant aftertaste. But it’s not about the temperature. This is because your beer absorbs excess light. Keep it out of the sun to keep the beer fresh.

As the Man Made DIY tips site explains, the hops in beer are UV-sensitive. If the beer is left in a clear glass bottle in the sun, the hops will partially turn to sulfur, leading to a rotten taste and a ruined party. While you may have heard that beer needs to be kept cold to prevent this from happening, it is technically kept in a dark refrigerator to prevent skunk odor.

This is why so many beer bottles have dark brown glass. The darker color filters out UV light to prevent skunk odor. Of course, some beers still come in clear bottles or other containers, so if you have them it’s best to keep them away from light. Better yet, buy beer from a dark bottle or opaque can, straight out of the refrigerator, and then store it in the refrigerator. Temperature may not affect the taste of the skunks, but if you keep them in the refrigerator all the time, you never riskgetting cold .
