Four Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Thrift Store Shopping

Thrift stores, especially in upmarket areas , are a great source of inexpensive clothing and home furnishings. Here are four tips to make your next frugal experience smoother and help you find the best one.

If you take the time, thrift stores are a treasure trove of unique and upscale items. But these wonderful finds take some work, here’s how to make your search easier.

  • Take a large bag with you to store your items of interest. Many second-hand and second-hand stores don’t bother with things like baskets and carts, and you don’t want to try to balance a bunch of things in your hands while you browse.
  • Wear more form-fitting clothing to make it easier to try on what you’re wearing. Some stores have limited or no fitting rooms, so being able to wear a dress or sweater over what you’re already wearing is a huge help. A skirt or tight-fitting shorts make trousers easier to try on. Wear shoes that are easy to take on and off.
  • Check the tag carefully as thrift stores often receive huge donations from people cleaning their (or those close to) toilets. The clothes could be from a different era when there were different sizes, or from a different country where sizes don’t match US sizes, and there are vanity sizes and other brand considerations to think about.
  • Do a bunch of maybe’s to get through before you hit the checkout. Keep whatever catches your eye so you don’t lose it if someone grabs it. Having a stack, which maybe, also helps you deal with similar issues as you look at everything together, and can also help you stay on budget.

These tips will make your economy trip more productive, so you will spend more time looking for the things you love and less time solving some of the thrift store problems. Watch the video above to find out more.
