Make a Cheap and Portable Camping Stove From Shelving Brackets
When you’re out on a hike and want to cook something in a saucepan or skillet, all you really need is how to hold the vessel over hot coals. One cheap and portable solution is to bring some metal shelf brackets with you.
In this video from Grant Thompson, we see him using three metal brackets to form a makeshift stove that can hold more than enough weight to hold a pot or pan. They only cost about a dollar and you can buy them at almost any hardware store. Thompson then presses one side of each staple into the ground over the already hot coals in a triangle shape overlapping the ends of each staple. And you can use different size brackets according to your needs; the smaller ones work well for coals, but you may need larger brackets for active fire.
This simple, cheap solution that won’t add a lot of weight to your camping gear, Thompson says, was inspired by Scream Stewart’s book on survival tricks .
