Use Dropbox to Save Mac Preferences for Easy Setup When Buying a New Computer
If you tend to customize your new Mac just like your old Mac, you know how tedious it can be to download files, tweak options, and fiddle with various preference panels. Blogger Jacob Salmela shows you how to use Dropbox to save all of these settings.
The idea here is to use Dropbox as a tool for recovering files and settings. In this case, these are bash profiles, ssh folders, QuickLook plugins, screen savers, Automater workflows, and more. This can be done in part with iCloud, but Dropbox offers a lot of flexibility and control. To do this, you need to create symbolic links for the various home folders and then create a script that will do the restore. It’s a little confusing, but if you want to use Dropbox instead of Apple’s options, Salmela walks you through everything you need to.
