Always Check Carry-on Size Restrictions When Flying International Airlines

If you can pack everything you need for a long trip in your carry-on, go for it, but if you’re flying overseas, keep in mind that carry- on size restrictions are more often applied by international carriers. “Low-cost airlines in Europe are especially known for this,” says Rick Steves.

Aside from the different size and weight restrictions on carry-on baggage than many local carriers, you may have to be mindful of enforcement when flying international airlines. Travel expert Rick Steves explains:

Be aware that some airlines, especially many of Europe’s low-cost carriers, have carry-on size restrictions that are smaller – and usually much more strictly enforced – than what we’re used to in the US (where 14 x 22 x 9 inches) is general standard). They may also have stricter carry-on baggage restrictions.

Problems don’t always arise, and you shouldn’t expect someone to measure and weigh your bags at the gate, but if you drag or roll an unusually large or bulky bag towards the gate, someone might stop you. and make you get tested – for a fee, of course. Visit your airline’s website to find out what their specific carry-on baggage restrictions are.
