Live Every Day As If It Is Your First and Not Your Last
Sometimes it’s interesting to think about life in terms of our limited time. If you knew that today is your last day, would you be happy with what you are doing? This is an interesting question, but not very practical. When you think about the expiration date, this can be problematic for several reasons.
In a recent TEDx talk, Leanne Dell, writer and nurse, explains the problem of the “last day” mentality. While focusing on the expiration date may be motivating for some people, it is stressful for most of us. It has all the signs of an existential crisis . It makes us feel like we are not doing enough and we are not sure what we can or should do in this limited amount of time. Rather than living each day as if it were the last, DellĂ© suggests the opposite:
Live each day as if it were your first. If we live each day filled with amazement and appreciation, while discovering genuine feelings of joy, I believe that the motivation for our true passion is more likely to manifest on its own … I would say that we can cope with our daily routines. and responsibilities, pursuing our passion. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
It’s an interesting shift in perspective that allows you to do the same without the logistics hassle. You still think about what is important to you, but this approach leaves room for the process necessary to do what is important to you, including your daily routine.
