Three Ways to Improve Your Sense of Smell
Smell is one of those things that can be easily taken for granted. If you want to improve the sensitivity of your nose, here are three helpful tips.
In this TED-Ed YouTube video, Alexandra Horowitz , associate professor at Barnard College , explains the science of smell and how our noses work. She also shares some helpful tips for anyone looking to improve their ability to recognize odors. So, if you’re looking to refresh your nose, here’s what Horowitz recommends you do:
- Get closer: If you want to learn how to recognize smells, you need to bring them closer to your nose. Your nose will be closer to the source of the smell, and the warmth of your breath will make it easier to catch.
- Inhale deeply: the actual smelling process takes place in the bridge of the nose, so take one or two firm, sharp breaths to get more odor molecules into it.
- Obsess over smells : When you pay attention to smells, try to describe them, name them, and try to find the sources of the smell, you are more likely to remember it so you can identify the same smell later.
So go and come closer, sniff hard, pay attention and of course watch your nose.
