How to Make Your Own Portable Pocket Rolls of Duct Tape
I recently came across a smart little product called RediTape , which is an ultra-thin pocket roll of the most versatile human tool: duct tape . Here’s how to make a DIY version that’s cheaper and more customizable to suit your preferences.
Portable duct tape is not a new idea – we’ve looked at ways to stick it to your keychain and your wallet – but there is still room for some adaptation in this concept. The design of RediTape is thoughtful because its length allows more tape to fit in a much thinner profile. It’s small enough to fit in your pocket, your car’s glove box, day backpack, insect proof bag, and even a running strap (great for preventing blisters). However, there are many reasons why you might want to make your own version:
- It’s cheaper: A roll of RediTape costs about $ 3.50 and comes with 5 yards of tape. You can buy a 15 yard roll for the same price and make three of your own portable rolls of duct tape.
- More control: you can decide how much or how little you want to stick to the portable roll of duct tape. Make it as thin or thick as you like.
- Brand selection: Not all duct tapes are created equal. If you have your preferred brand of duct tape, you can stick with it.
Also, RediTape only has six colors, but other brands like Duck have 20.
And making your own pocket roll is very easy. Here’s how:
- Cut a 4.5-by-2-inch rectangle out of thin cardboard or index card.
- Wrap the cardboard with duct tape to create a base layer.
- Create a new layer of duct tape and wrap it around the cardboard until you get the amount you want.
That’s all! You now have a pocket roll of duct tape for a fraction of the cost. It only takes a couple of minutes, you can make as much as you need, and you can reuse your cardboard piece and refill your pocket roll when it runs out.
