Make Chrome Ask Where to Save Downloaded Files by Changing This Setting

Chrome: By default, Chrome automatically places every file you download in your Downloads folder. If you’d rather choose where to put your files, click that switch in Chrome’s preferences.

To enable this feature and control where your downloads go, follow these steps:

  1. Click the menu icon in Chrome and select Preferences.
  2. Scroll down and click on “Show extension settings …”
  3. Scroll down to the Downloads section.
  4. Click the “Ask me where to save each file before uploading” radio button.

If enabled, Chrome will always ask where you want to put the file, rather than using the default downloads folder. Now you can save yourself the hassle of digging into one giant folder when you need to move your downloads.
