This Video Shows You How to Use SMART to Track Hard Drive Failures.

Hard drive failure is one of the worst things that can happen to your computer as you lose tons of data. Fortunately, most floppy drives include a set of tools called SMART that can monitor your drive and notify you when you run into problems.

As explained in the video above from Techquickie, SMART monitors all kinds of information about your hard drive, including its temperature, vibration levels, bad sectors, write cycles (for SSDs), and more. With this data, it can give you an early warning when your hard drive might fail.

However, you need to look for SMART in order to use it. This function is similar to the diagnostic computer in your car. Your computer doesn’t just have an application that shows you all this data. However, there are several ways to access it. First, you can use the command line. Run the following two commands to check for errors:

wmic

diskdrive get status

If it returns OK, then at least your hard drive is not suffering from critical errors. If it returns something else, you might be in trouble. You can also use such tools as the Passmark DiskCheckup, to get more information and find out how faulty your hard drive .
