Rest of the Day: Vine Will Close on January 17
Vine is finally coming to an end after Twitter’s decision to shut down the app last year. The good news, however, is that the website will remain an archive of the current Vines, and a simpler application will take its place. About this and much more in today’s news.
- On January 17, the Vine app will become a simpler app called Vine Camera. You can use it to create new Vines, but instead, you share them directly to Twitter, or just save them locally. It’s better than nothing, and if you’ve found Vines mostly via Twitter, it’s a pretty small change. If you want to download all your Vines, you must do so by January 17th. [Vine]
- Google makes it easy to keep track of your fitness goals in Google Calendar. Last year, they added a new feature to track your goals, and it can now include fitness data from Google Fit and Apple Health. [Google]
- Lyft is introducing new LED signs on drivers’ dashboards to make it easier to see your ride. They call it Amp, and the little sign can change color to match the icon in the Lyft app so you know the car is for you. [Lyft]
- Dell has a new laptop that can be charged wirelessly. It’s actually a Surface Book-style tablet / laptop hybrid with a detachable keyboard with an interesting and distinctive wireless charging function using a charging pad. The mat is quite large, but leaving it on the table where you park your laptop is also convenient. (The Verge is right, these strange PCs are interesting .) [Gizmodo]
- If you’re using an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, Instagram will now support “wide color capture”. So many flowers! The new iMac and iPad Pro (in addition to the iPhone 7) support a wider color gamut. [Mike Krieger via Twitter]
