Make Cash a Smarter Gift by Linking It With a Savings Goal

Money is a deliberately thoughtless gift, but it doesn’t have to. Tying a gift to something that really matters is a lot more thoughtful than just handing someone cash.

Lizzie Post, co-host of the podcast Awesome Etiquette, said on Credit.com:

You really want to think about why you chose to give money and whether the other person will be receptive to it. You want it to look like this: “I know what you really wanted because I know that you are saving for something.” It’s important to understand this so that it doesn’t look like “oh, here’s the money” and that you don’t think about the gift.

There are ways to make it even more personal. For example, when I went on a trip to Mexico, my friend wanted to give me a snorkeling activity, but could not find gift cards. Instead, she printed out a few reviews and wrote a note about why she thought I would like it, and then gave me enough money to pay for the session. It was a great gift! If your recipient is saving up for something, you can make it personal by stashing the money in a cheap piggy bank or simply by writing a reassuring note to encourage them to stick to their goal. The point is, cash seems impersonal, but there are ways to make it useful. For more tips, navigate to Credit.com’s full publication at the link below.
