These Helpful Tips Can Help Extend the Life of Your Holiday Wreaths, Poinsettes and Trees
I love the look of a fresh green wreath hanging on my door or a pretty poinsettia on my desk, but I’m a plant destroyer to say the least. Luckily, Real Simple has put together a guide to caring for all of your holiday greens, from amaryllis flowers to Christmas trees.
The link below will fully explain how to avoid the death of a number of holiday plants, but here we will touch on the main players:
- Wreaths and Garlands: To get the most (and the most) out of your Christmas greenery, gardening expert Carmen Johnston recommends soaking them in a bucket of water overnight before hanging them, and sprinkling them every couple of days.
- Poinsettia: This Christmas Mainstay hates cold or damp, but it doesn’t need to be watered daily. For this vibrant plant to look its best, keep it above 40 degrees Fahrenheit and make sure excess water has room to drain.
- Potted Christmas Trees: These are pretty easy to keep alive, although you’ll need to enlist the help of another green item. To keep your potted evergreen plant well hydrated, Johnston recommends placing a galvanized metal water pan under the pot and decorating it with moss. Fill the pan with water and check the soil daily to make sure it doesn’t dry out.
As the man who killed three aircraft factories this year alone – in their defense, they don’t make any noise – I find all this information very useful. In fact, being armed with this know-how made me feel bold enough, bold enough to buy the poinsettia that I have been eyeing up since the beginning of this month.
