Four More Ways to Get Rid of Static Electricity During the Winter Months
If your clothes seem more static during the cold winter months, then you are not crazy. The lack of moisture greatly facilitates the build-up of static electricity. Fortunately, there are several ways to get rid of it.
We’ve shared many solutions in the past to contain static electricity : apply lotion , use aluminum foil or safety pins in the dryer, and run a wire hanger over your clothes . But there are even more ways to unbutton your stuff. Troy Schibroth , professor of biomedical engineering at Rutgers University and editor of Physics Review Applied , shared a few tips with Time :
- Spray some water on the clothes with a spray bottle in the fog mode. Moisture attracts positive or negative charges to itself. And washing your hair less in winter – so that more natural oils build up in it – this will prevent hair frizz.
- Rub the towel with a drying cloth. You can toss one in the dryer if you want, but all you really need is a quick dry towel to get it going. You can even use the same sheet over and over for several weeks.
- Throw a damp cloth into the dryer for the last five minutes of the cycle. The moisture will absorb the static charge.
- Brush the garment gently with a carbon fiber brush. The metal bristles will produce small discharges and create charged ions in the air that will drain the charge from your clothing.
Now you can free yourself from the harsh attachment of winter and move freely. If you want to know more about what causes static clinging be sure to check out the link below.
