Explore Historic Sites Across the Country With This Interactive Map
A professor at the University of Waterloo has created an interactive map with 49,603 historical landmarks. It was a research project, but it’s actually quite a fun tool for browsing and planning travel.
Together with a team of researchers, Professor William Cook spent two years solving the traveling salesman problem with historic sites. The task is aimed at finding the most efficient route between several destinations in order to get to the original destination. Cook pulled 49,603 locations from the National Register of Historic Places and then used data from Google Maps to find the fastest route between them.
You are probably not going to take the 217,605-mile route that Cook and his explorers paved, but you can explore an interactive map that includes nearly 50,000 points of interest.
