Rest of the Day: Verizon Will Kill Galaxy Note 7 Devices on January 5
Verizon changed its mind after earlier refusing to release a software update from Samsung that prevented Galaxy Note 7 phones from charging. Eventually, on January 5th, they will blow up volatile phones.
- Just last week, Verizon judged that disconnecting phones could potentially pose a security risk for customers who did not have alternative devices in case of an emergency. Instead, they decided, like all major carriers, to wait until the end of the holiday season. [Verizon via The Verge ]
- Super Mario Run for iOS is now available for download. Good! It’s a shame that the game requires an internet connection, which means it won’t necessarily be your game when you’re on an airplane or subway. I suspect that if I start playing before going offline it might work – at least for a few minutes. [Kotaku]
- Facebook Messenger now has Snapchat-style face filters. The app has a new camera that can apply special effects and filters to your face when you chat with friends. Honestly, silly augmented reality filters are one of the few good technical things that have happened in recent years, so of course. [Recode]
- Soylent is back with an updated formula that will hopefully induce vomiting in fewer people. [Business Insider]
- T-Mobile offers a 12 month DirecTV Now gift if you switch from AT&T to T-Mobile. There’s a slightly smaller print there – you have to subscribe to T-Mobile One (their unlimited, but not really a service) and open two additional lines, and then you get a $ 35 credit to your account (the cost of the cheapest DirecTV Now plan ).
