No, Wearing a Hat All the Time Won’t Make You Bald

There are several known factors that cause hair loss, but a hat is not one of them, even if you wear it every day. Here’s the truth about the old wives’ tale.

In this video from the YouTube channel Mental Floss, Craig Gasoline explains the main causes of hair loss: poor diet, drugs, infections, pregnancy, injury, and the most important factor – genetics. However, there is a condition known as traction alopecia, in which the hairs become narrower due to constant traction or friction. The skin is damaged and scars appear on the hair follicles, so nothing else can grow there. Regularly wearing tight ponytails, hair clips, or a hard hat can put you at risk. But just wearing a hat is not enough to cause that if it was not very tight on the head.

However, wearing a hat can speed up the balding process if you are already losing hair due to genetics or other reasons. When you take off your hat, you can pull the hairs out, and if it’s too tight, you can pull out the hairs by straightening it. So put on your hats a little more loosely and you should be fine.
