Surveillance Monitors Access to Your Mac’s Camera and Microphone, Alerts You When They Are Active

Mac: While it is not easy for malware to hijack a Mac’s microphone or webcam, it is always a theoretical possibility. Oversight is a free app that will alert you every time the app tries to access your camera or microphone.

Surveillance works in much the same way as the previously mentioned Micro Snitch , except that it is free. Every time an app tries to access your camera or microphone, you receive a notification asking you to grant or deny access. While you will see a green light on your webcam pop up every time you use it, some malware could theoretically sneak in and record Skype or Hangouts streams that you might not notice, and Oversight can catch that as well. The app was created by security researcher Patrick Wardle , who has created several other lightweight monitoring apps for the Mac. While it might seem like you need a tin foil hat to use Oversight, it’s still useful even when a regular app does something a little weird, such as when the Shazam Mac app kept listening even after you turned it off.
