Make Your Smartphone Less Distracting by Switching the Screen to Grayscale

If you find yourself overly dependent on your smartphone and can’t help but check it every few minutes for no reason, this simple tweak can make the cut easier.

In this video, Dr. James Hamblin from The Atlantic’s If Our Bodies Could Talk” shares a tip to make your phone less attractive: Set the screen to grayscale. As Hamblin explains, bright colors grab our attention and pique our interest, especially red (the color of those little notification bubbles). If you remove the color, you also miss out on some of the joy of flipping from app to app on your phone. Suddenly, your colorful social media feeds, games, and dating apps will feel like an old newspaper. And the less fun and attention your phone gets, the less likely you’ll be taking it out of your pocket every second second.

To switch iPhone to grayscale: Go to Settings> General> Accessibility> Display Adaptation> Color Filters> and select Grayscale.

As GeekKraft HD from Android Cenral explained, the process on Android is a little more complicated:

Go to the About Device section, find the Build Number and tap it a few times until the phone tells you that you are a developer. Then go back to the settings and above about the device you will see a new option called “Developer options”. Open it, find Simulate Color Space and set it to Monochrome.

Your experience may vary from this trick, but when it seems like your phone is taking over your life, things help a little. We used to suggest using grayscale for your computer monitor for the same reasons.
