Grow Potatoes in Pots or Growing Bags
Given the underground nature of the tubers, you might think that you need a lot of space in your garden where you can dig deep if you want to grow edible potatoes successfully. In fact, you can quite easily grow potatoes above the ground in a pot or bag.
In this video from GrowVeg we see how it’s done. You will need a pot or container that holds about 3 gallons of potting soil. Obviously, this is not something you intend to put on the windowsill, but it is small enough to fit on a small balcony or patio. However, burying a potato at the grocery store doesn’t mean it can be cut; The most likely way to be successful at harvesting is to buy seed potatoes from a horticultural center for that specific purpose. You can help them by letting them germinate in a cool, dry place before burying them. Then, in a process called “hilling,” you bury the sprouted potatoes at a relatively shallow depth and add more soil as the foliage grows upward. Water them well and once they start blooming, you will most likely have a decent potato crop.
As he says in the video, “You haven’t experienced the best that humble potatoes have to offer until you grow them for yourself.” This is a motto that I can stay behind.
