Use Hand Warmers to Keep Batteries Alive in Cold Weather

You may have noticed that during cold weather, your device’s batteries drain faster than usual in winter. Very cold temperatures affect their chemistry, but using conventional hand warmers can save your device’s batteries from cold.

This tip comes from photographer David Bergman , who ran out of battery in his camera when he went out to shoot on cold winter days. So he put the spare batteries in his jacket pocket, along with a small hand warmer. Bergman suggests not putting them in your bag or backpack because they are likely to get too cold when removed from your body heat.

While it deals specifically with camera batteries, the same principle applies to any other conventional battery pack. (For example, I know my iPhone pretty much shuts down if I only use it for a few minutes in cold weather.) This is a common problem with cars as well , but I don’t think hand warmers will burn it for a car battery. … But if you’re just trying to keep your regular gear up and running, some inexpensive hand warmers can help.
