Why You Should Serve White Wine With a Cheese Platter
If you’re unsure which wine to go with this fantastic looking cheese platter from a local deli, grab your favorite white bottle. That’s why.
By studying flavor combinations and sensations at the Center for the Science of Cooking and Nutrition (CGSA – Center for Taste and Eating Behavior), sensologist Mara Galmarini discovered that red wine is a hit or not when it comes to cheese pairs – never in between. As Galmarini explains to The Salt , white wine reduces the risk of creating an unpleasant pairing. If serving several different types of cheese, such as a cheese platter, serve white wine better. Ed Behr of the Art of Eating newsletter agrees, noting that most red wines are “not refreshing at all.” And refreshing – with a touch of dry sweetness – is what you need when cheese plays the main part of your meal. So, when in doubt, go for white wine.
