Rest of the Day: Twitter Adds New Mute Tools to Curb Harassment
In an effort to tackle the online abuse that has plagued Twitter over the years, especially during election season, they are adding new ways to shut down conversations and reports of abuse. About this and much more in today’s news.
- You can now turn off all conversations or certain keywords on Twitter so that they no longer appear in your notifications. You can add muted words or hashtags in your notification settings, as shown in previous tests . They also updated their harassment reporting system to speed up the handling of whistle-blowing reports. The new features are a welcome addition, but ostensibly they are an aesthetic fix as you will still be exposed to offensive messages before turning them off, in addition to images that cannot be stopped based on word filters. - In other news, according to Kryptowire security , some low-cost Android phones are sending user data to China. It’s not a mistake; the software was developed by the manufacturer to track user behavior, but was not intended for US phones. BLU has already released a software update for their affected devices.
