Collisions with reindeer kill about 200 people every year , and collisions with reindeer are more frequent in autumn than at any other time of the year. If you live in the land of the deer, this advice might get you out of trouble.
Sara W. Schweig of The Dodo spoke with Sophie Gilbert , assistant professor of wildlife ecology at the University of Idaho, about the dangers of crossing deer and what you can do to avoid collision. First, keep to the center lane on a multi-lane road if possible. This gives the reindeer more room if they graze on the side of the road. And if you scare them, you have more time to react if they run out into the road. And take seriously these yellow diamond-shaped signs ferrying deer.
