No Need to Wash Your Coffee Mug Every Day

If you are the type of sloth who, instead of washing a cup of coffee after each use, simply pours fresh coffee over the evaporated remains of yesterday’s cup, I have good news for you. In fact, you don’t need to wash your cup of coffee every day.

Washing your mug at work is actually a much less hygienic option, according to the Wall Street Journal, given the fact that everyone in the office uses the same damp sponge for washing dishes. As Heidi Mitchell of WSJ infectious disease expert Jeffrey Stark said, your coffee cup does have germs in and around it, but these are not germs you really need to worry about:

“If I were to cultivate a regular, unwashed cup of coffee, I would certainly detect germs,” Starke said. “But remember, the vast majority came from the person who used the cup.”

Of course, this only applies if you are the only sipper from the specified vessel; separation from another person destroys the whole situation of “one circle, one set of germs.” Another caveat: you will want to wash your face if you are using cream and sugar, as they can cause mold to grow. However, you should probably wash it at home . This communal sponge is bad news.
