Adjust the Speed, Pitch and Ratio of Google Text to Speech on Android

Google has a pretty powerful text-to-speech engine on Android. For most, the default settings are fine. However, if you’ve ever wanted to slow down or tweak your voice, you can do so in some hidden settings.

As the MakeUseOf tips site points out, there are several settings that you can change by going to Settings> Accessibility> Text to Speech on your phone. Here you will see two sliders for Speech Rate and Pitch. You can make the generated speech faster or slower, and higher or lower. Click the “Listen to an example” button to hear it.

If you want to go even further, tap the gear icon next to Google Text-to-Speech, and then select Settings for Google Text-to-Speech to find a few more options. Here you can increase the volume of speech so that it is more distinct than other sounds, or my favorite setting: intonation. This parameter allows you to change the degree of “expressiveness” of speech. You can make it expressive, somewhat expressive, or flat. So, if you think Google’s voice is too optimistic for you, you can turn it into a cold, dispassionate robot instead.
