Post-Workout Beer Won’t Hurt Your Gym Efforts

Some of us like six packs. That is beer. Others love to reassure and point out that drinking beer after exercise will damage your ability to recover from exercise and, even worse, “kill your gains.” They are only partly right, but for the most part, these fears are exaggerated.

We know that muscle growth and repair occurs only after training. Some studies like this one published in PLoS One suggest that regular alcohol consumption can slow this process by suppressing testosterone production, which plays a crucial role in muscle building. It can be troubling if you drink three to seven beers a day, but if you enjoy drinking beer from time to time after a workout, you should be fine. Researchers from the independent supplement and nutritional researchers Examine.com wrote in Men’s Health magazine :

The evidence right now is that if beer has an effect, good or bad, that effect is very small – subtle enough that if the perfect pint of your favorite beer is your favorite way to relax after a hard workout, then you might be drinking guilt. is free. Unless you start soaking your clothes in it or are not in the habit of drinking, beer alone is unlikely to hurt or help your workout.

Unsurprisingly, this pretty much falls under the golden (but kind of vague) rule of “do it in moderation”. This, of course, includes beer. Every now and then, a beer after the gym or one party at a party won’t spoil everything, but regular binge drinking (imagine seven bottles of beer per 150 pound person) can be a completely different matter.
