One Minute Guide to Dressing for Your Job Interview

Appropriate attire for your interview is the quickest way to make the best possible impression. But it can be difficult to determine exactly what you should wear, even if the interviewer gives you a hint. Here are some tips for two types of employers: old school and new school.

For old school companies like legal, financial or insurance companies, a more classic approach with darker or neutral colors should be taken. Women should wear knee-length dresses, skirts or dress pants, and a dress shirt and blazer. Heels or polished ballerinas and a minimum of accessories will keep you looking professional. Men should choose a well-fitting suit in navy blue or black with dress shoes.

Newer types of companies such as startups, tech companies, sales or creative companies have a more casual dress code that extends to job interviews. In fact, sometimes showing up too clothed can be a sign that you don’t fit the culture. Jeans are fine, but darker tones will work better and look good. Women can show their individuality with bright colors and bright accessories. For men, a button-down shirt without a tie should work, and you should wear a belt and nice shoes so you don’t cross the line and become too casual. See the video above for examples of outfits.
