Create a Talking Radio That Reads Incoming Notifications With Raspberry Pi
The idea of a machine that intelligently talks to you might be a long way off, but Instructables user MisterM wanted to create a radio that announced general details throughout the day. To do this, he hooked up the Raspberry Pi Zero to a text-to-speech engine and then added a dose of If This Then That .
The idea is simple: at certain times of the day, the radio “speaks” the subject lines of the email out loud. Using various IFTTT recipes, MisterM created triggers to send various facts like tomorrow’s weather, social media notifications and more to your Gmail account. When an email arrives, the Pi uses its text-to-speech engine to read it aloud. This is a clever workaround for creating verbal notifications for pretty much anything IFTTT supports. What’s more, it’s all housed in a 1940s radio case, so it’s a cute little machine to load. Head over to Instructables for a complete guide.
